High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265 is a successor to Advanced Video Coding (AVC), also known as H.264, which is one of the compression schemes used by Blu-ray. It is the latest generation video compression standard started with an idea of offering the same level of picture quality as AVC, but with better compression so that there is less data to deal with. HEVC provides superior video quality and up to twice the data compression as the previous standard.
