DiRT 3 is easily the best release yet in the rally car series, giving players the opportunity to tear down the backroads of countries they will likely never even visit in cars they will never afford at speeds of over 100 MPH. But hey, isn’t that why we play video games? DiRT 3 has a big focus on weather and unpaved driving paths (as you might expect from the name), and it handles these environments beautifully. Sliding through dirt and mud feels like it should, and you won’t even be mad as the hail and snow obscure your view they look so good.

Formula One fans sometimes get the short end of the stick when it comes to racing games, but thankfully, Codemasters’ F1 2012 presents a meticulously crafted recreation of classic tracks sure to please any fan. The game starts out with Yas Marina Stadium and Abu Dhabi, showing newcomers to the series the ropes. The 2012 version of the game pays very close attention to accuracy, introducing new changes to the sport not present in the 2011 edition of the game – a small but notable detail sure to please fans.
Forza Horizon
An Xbox 360 exclusive, the Forza series is Microsoft’s answer to the legendary Gran Turismo series that calls Playstation home – and while it will always be the newcomer playing catch up to some, many changed allegiances with Forza Horizon. Developed by a hodgepodge of developers from the best racing game houses in the industry, set loose with the massive budget allowed to the Forza franchise, the game became arguably the best open-world racing game ever developed. Taking place mostly in the Colorado countryside, the huge wide open expanses of desert and the curvy mountain passes look equally stunning. Forza Horizon is a must-buy for any racing fan.
Need for Speed Most Wanted
Games that try to be true-to-life simulations are nice, but sometimes you just want to go as fast as possible in a high-thrill, easy-to-control environment. Need For Speed Most Wanted has you covered. An open-world game like Forza Horizon, NFS takes it instead to the city, built from the ground up with racing in mind. One highlight is the Ambush mode, which tasks you with avoiding the police for as long as possible.
Gran Turismo 5
The grand daddy of them all, the GT series has long been hailed as the paragon of realism in racing games. The amount of fine tuning that went into making sure each of the game’s dozens of cars handled exactly like its real world counterparts is astounding. That craftsmanship extends to the locations featured in the game, including Nurburgring, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and Suzaka Circuit.
